Research Grant Opportunities

AST awards annual career development grants for early career investigators as well as career transition grants to support transition to an R-series or equivalent grant. In addition, we put a call for priority focused grants when available.

Past Grant Recipients

The AST has awarded more than 250 research grants since 1995. View Past Research Grant Recipients

Career Development Grants

The purpose of these grants is to foster the training of early career investigators who have the potential to contribute to transplant science/immunobiology and/or treatment of transplant recipients. The grants encourage continued commitment of high-quality applicants to their careers in transplantation.

Grants are typically awarded in the amount of $75,000 a year for one or two years as budget allows. The number of grants we award per year is dependent on the amount of available funding.

The cycle for AST career development grants is:

• Submissions are accepted between August 1 and December 1
• Applicants are notified in the following March
• Research begins the next July

Only applications supporting research directly related to solid organ transplantation will be considered. Applications are accepted in basic, clinical, and translational research.

Fellowship Research Grants

The fellowship grant is for applicants who have spent two years or less performing research in transplantation and/or immunology since their last doctoral degree. Applicants must have a sponsor.

Early Faculty Development Research Grants

The early faculty development research grants are for investigators within the first five years of their first faculty appointment. The grant allows investigators to expand on preliminary findings that will become the basis for individual research or career development awards.

Transition to Independence Grants

Formerly the Career Transition Grant, the purpose of these grants is to promote the careers of academic investigators whose development of an independent research program is focused on the field of solid organ transplantation (and/or immunology relating to solid organ transplant). The grants support the investigator’s transition to an R-series or equivalent grant.

The cycle for AST Transition to Independence grants is:

• Submissions are accepted between March and June 15
• Applicants are notified in October
• Research begins the next January

Only applications supporting research directly related to solid organ transplantation will be considered. Applications are accepted in basic, clinical, and translational research.

Application Details

In 2025, grants are awarded in the amount of $115,000 total for two years.

  • Immunosuppression, rejection, and biomarkers
  • Graft engineering and xenotransplantation
  • Living donation and organ allocation
  • Value, equity, and access to transplantation
