Invitation for AJT Editorial Fellowship Applications

The American Journal of Transplantation invites applications for its newly established Editorial Fellowship Program, which will offer a yearlong editorial experience in the publication and peer review process to fellows and junior faculty in transplant-related fields.  
 
Each AJT Editorial Fellow will work directly with an experienced Associate Editor and staff to gain experience in the day-to-day steps of peer review and publication through a mentor-based relationship. Each mentor–mentee pair will review original submissions together to help the fellow develop skills in assessing and describing manuscripts’ significance, novelty, validity, and relevance for the AJT readership while enhancing the Fellow’s verbal, writing, and illustration skills. 
 
Fellows will meet monthly by teleconference or in person with their mentor, or with the AJT editorial and staff team, and will follow manuscripts from submission to publication. Each AJT Fellow will assist in creating visual abstracts for significant manuscripts to be published on AJT social media 3 times in the year. Additionally, the Fellow and Editor-Mentor may coauthor an editorial or letter to the editor on a fundamental topic of peer review and publishing. The fellows can expect to devote 2 to 3 hours per week to the program. 
 
The inaugural AJT Editorial Fellowship will run from 2019 American Transplant Congress through 2020 American Transplant Congress, and select Fellow(s) will be invited to attend the 2019 annual AJT Editorial Board meeting at ATC on June 2, 2019 at 12:30pm EDT, where they will be introduced to the journal, team, and processes. AST and ASTS will cover ATC registration fees for Fellows. 
 
Applicants are restricted to AST/ASTS member fellows currently in an accredited transplant fellowship training program or faculty within 3 years of their initial appointment. Selection by an editorial committee comprised of AST and ASTS leaders and AJT leadership will be based on initial application materials, prior medical and scientific research skills, quality of writing, critical analysis skills, and the goal of a diverse fellowship alumni. We strongly encourage applications from candidates from groups underrepresented in transplantation.

• AST or ASTS membership status • Letter of recommendation from Program Director or Department Head/Division Chief 
• Finalist candidates will be asked to review a manuscript that will be assessed for quality of writing and critical analysis skills.
